The Funen Salute Battery was founded in 1980 by Christian Flensted under the motto: “Too few salutes are fired in Denmark”.
On Whitsun morning, the first salute was fired from Frederiksminde with the battery’s first salute cannon “Henry”.
Later, 2 additional salute cannons were added: “Ivar” and “Jens”.
The battery fired hundreds of salutes in the following years, and the proceeds – DKK 2,000 per salute – were donated to the restoration of “Skoleskibet Danmark”.
The salute battery’s “fee” consisted of herring and a dram.
Christian appointed several prominent people as honorary members of the salute battery, including Prince Henrik, Danny Kay and Victor Borge.
